The Journey of the Trans Parent: My Personal and Professional Experiences as the Parent of a Transgender Child
Duration: 1+15
Location: TBA
LCSW CE

Lisa
Fritz
(Biography)
Parenting the transgender child (at any age) is a complex and challenging experience, even for the accepting parent. Personal, familial, political, and societal norms and values impact and influence parents as they navigate the journey. While professional knowledge and experience can act as a support for the parent, they may not buffer individual emotions and responses. Statistics indicate a direct correlation between supportive parents and improved mental health in transgender children. Those interacting with parents professionally need to be prepared to interact with empathy for the parents' emotional responses, as well as, reinforcing the needs of the child. This presentation will utilize personal experience as the parent of a transgender child, direct professional experience as a therapist, and research statistics to present a picture of what is needed from and by the parents of this population.

In this interactive workshop, we'll explore the role that faith has played in our transgender journeys and the journeys of others in our lives. Three panelists will each share a short introduction about how their faith and connection to something higher than themselves has shaped their life journey including coming out as transgender in that community. They will also tap into how they are shaping lives in their places of worship and even the larger faith itself. We will devote the second half of our workshop to Q&A and discussion with the audience. Our panelists are: Ms. Jennifer Lehman, Lutheran; Lilia Weber, Unitarian Universalist; and Christine Zuba, Roman Catholic.

Bleeding While Trans: An Introduction to TGD Menstruation
Duration: 1+15
Location: TBA
LCSW CE

Mx. Tess
Olsson
(Biography)
Menstruation can be a difficult, confusing, potentially dysphoria-inducing, and sometimes awkward conversation for a lot of trans men, transmasculine individuals, and other transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people who menstruate. But it doesn’t have to be!

This session will introduce inclusive and gender-affirming language and slang to use to talk about menstruation, debunk common TGD menstrual myths (yes, you can still get pregnant while on testosterone, even if you aren’t menstruating!), and explore the relationships between menstruation and the TGD body (for both those on gender-affirming hormone therapy and those who are not). Participants will develop strategies to alleviate potential menstruation-induced dysphoria, including exploring TGD-inclusive menstrual products and menstruation cessation techniques. Attendees will also have the (optional) opportunity to participate in a group discussion on menstrual experiences and sentiments and share any personal strategies they may use to manage discomfort or dysphoria related to menstruation.

This workshop will also examine systemic and structural barriers to menstrual equity and care that are unique to the TGD experience, as well as provide suggestions for addressing or overcoming these barriers. Obstacles to and facilitators of TGD menstrual equity in the context of public bathroom design, provider education (or lack thereof), menstrual research, and more will be discussed.

Attendees of all gender identities will gain knowledge and develop skills to have affirming and informed conversations about TGD menstruation and menstrual equity. People of all gender identities are encouraged to attend and participate in this workshop!

Ms. Savannah

(Biography)
Are you a crossdresser or are a partner of a male-to-female crossdresser? Are you living with the knowledge that you are a male crossdresser? Are you a cis-female partner of a man who crossdresses? Are you struggling with what it means to be in a relationship with a man who you have discovered – by accident or his own admission – enjoys wearing feminine clothing?

Join me as as we set out to uncover some of the reasons why so many men (including myself) dress as women. Somewhere amid the misconceptions, stereotypes, and ignorance is the truth about non-transitioning, non-fetish, crossdressing men. From our gender identity, presentation, perception, to our biology and outward attractions, each of us is unique in how we see the world and ourselves it that world.

Whenever we gather together it becomes an attractive target for hate and as members of the LGBTQIA+ community we aren’t hard to find. The attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, shows that big crowds are easy targets, and the victims are not limited to just us. Let’s look at how our hate groups target the locations the locations we gather together. We will learn about how to spot surveillance, common areas where violence is likely, and most importantly how to develop a plan to avoid or evade such an attack.

Join us for the highlight of our conference—the Saturday Gala Dinner! This enchanting evening promises to be a celebration of unity, pride, and the incredible strength of our transgender community. Our keynote speaker is Wayne Maines.

Dr. Wayne M. Maines is the proud father of identical twins, Jonas Maines and Nicole Maines. Wayne and his wife Kelly worked extremely hard to raise their children in an environment that was not and is still not ready for the new generation of transgender and gender expansive children.

Wayne had a dream to take fathers of transgender children fishing. It was a chance to get away, to meet other dads who were struggling to keep their children safe, happy, and supported at home and at school. And so Wayne and other supportive fathers started an organization called The Dads Foundation. And when award winning director/producer Luchina Fisher heard about this dream, she wanted in. The end result is a Daytime Emmy award winning eleven-minute film of dads fishing for trout in Oklahoma.

Dinner menu options include:
  • Braised Beef Short Rib with Cabernet Demi (GF, DF)
  • Icelandic Cod with Soy Sake Glaze, Ginger, Honey (DF)
  • Vegan Cakes with Artichoke, Heart of Palm and Piquillo Pepper Puree (Vegan)
