Navigating life as a transgender person can bring unique challenges, especially when it comes to securing your future and ensuring your rights are protected. This dynamic workshop is designed to empower both married and unmarried transgender individuals and couples with the essential tools they need to plan for a secure and peaceful future. We’ll dive into critical areas of estate planning, healthcare, financial management, and tax compliance—topics that are often overlooked but are vital to living a full and protected life. This workshop is designed for transgender individuals and couples who want to take proactive steps toward securing their financial, legal, and healthcare future. Whether you’re in a relationship or flying solo, this session is for anyone interested in learning how to plan effectively in a world that often overlooks our unique needs. By the end of this workshop, you’ll leave with practical tools and knowledge on how to ensure your legal documents are up-to-date, your finances are secure, and your healthcare needs are addressed. It’s time to take control of your future and protect what matters most. What We’ll Cover:
  • Estate Planning for All Couples:
Whether you're married or unmarried, it’s crucial to ensure your assets and wishes are honored. We’ll discuss Last Wills and Testaments, how to name healthcare and financial powers of attorney, and provide guidance on ensuring these documents reflect your unique circumstances as a transgender individual or couple.
  • Title and Deed Management:
It's not just about having the right documents—your assets need to be properly titled or deeded to ensure your partner's legal rights. We’ll walk through how to manage property, investments, and joint assets, making sure everything is structured appropriately to protect both you and your partner.
  • Accessing Healthcare Services:
Healthcare can be a complicated issue, particularly for transgender individuals navigating gender-affirming procedures. We’ll talk about how to access necessary procedures now, without waiting until they are unavailable, and explore strategies to manage the financial burden—including dealing with medical bills later, even through bankruptcy if necessary.
  • Tax Filings and Business Considerations:
Staying on top of your taxes is crucial, whether you’re employed, self-employed, or own a business. We’ll cover the ins and outs of tax filings, how to make sure quarterly and annual reports are up-to-date, and the importance of making the right tax elections.
  • Financial Preparation for the Future:
With the possibility of an imminent recession, financial stability is more important than ever. This segment will focus on building up savings, reducing debt, and creating a financial strategy that gives you the flexibility to thrive, even during economic downturns. All Are Welcome -- Or Are They?
9:30 AM on Thu, Mar 20 in Lochiel

Rev. Grace
Ferris
(Biography)
Every church pats itself on the back by exclaiming that All Are Welcome! But the truth is, this simply three-word statement holds different meanings at different churches. Some, for example, welcome transgender people but will try hard to rehabilitate them through conversion therapy. Others welcome transgender people, but limit the extent to which they can become personally engaged. Inclusive or affirming churches, on the other hand, welcome transgender people fully. In this workshop we will explore the differences in these various kinds of churches, and will discuss red flags that you can use to locate a truly welcoming church in your own community. Participants will have access to the church finder tool developed by Mother Grace specifically for LGBTQ people. The church finder includes just about every Christian denomination. As a former military chaplain, Mother Grace is well versed in all churches.

Avoiding Anti Trans Violence - Being Safe in Large Groups and at Outdoor Events
3:45 PM on Sat, Mar 22 in William Penn

Ms. Kristin
Edwards
(Biography)
Whenever we gather together it becomes an attractive target for hate and as members of the LGBTQIA+ community we aren’t hard to find. The attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, shows that big crowds are easy targets, and the victims are not limited to just us. Let’s look at how our hate groups target the locations the locations we gather together. We will learn about how to spot surveillance, common areas where violence is likely, and most importantly how to develop a plan to avoid or evade such an attack.

Avoiding Anti Trans Violence - Indentifying Dangerous People
2:15 PM on Fri, Mar 21 in Lochiel

Ms. Kristin
Edwards
(Biography)
Violence against the transgender community is at an all-time high and continues to grow. In 2024 there were 32 murders of trans persons in the United States (Human Rights Campaign, 2024) and 250 murders of trans people worldwide. Last year, there were more than 671 anti-trans bills filed in 43 states (2024 anti-trans bills tracker, 2025), not including the attempt to keep the Congresswoman Sarah McBride (D) Del from using the bathrooms in the U.S. Capitol.

To avoid the rise in anti-trans violence, it is important to be able to identify attackers before they are close enough to hurt us. We are hard wired to protect ourselves from violence and all we need to do is learn how to recognize the signals. Come and learn about behavioral cues, pre-attack indicators, and how to evaluate behavior. We will discuss how to develop plans to escape and evade once you have identified a potentially violent individual. The easiest way to win a confrontation is not to be there!

Beating Their Swords into Plowshares: Proposing Some Strategies for Defeating Weaponized Religion
3:45 PM on Thu, Mar 20 in Governor

Melissa
Morton
(Biography)
It is no secret that claims of religious freedom have been used as a sword against transgender persons. It doesn't have to be this way. There is a case to be made that hostile acts against transgender persons do not constitute religion at all, but are merely acts of prejudiced notions. Furthermore, there is a case to be made that it is not an act of freedom to limit the freedom of others. Melissa combines law and theology in her presentation.

Being and Living as a Trans Person of Faith - Regardless
3:45 PM on Fri, Mar 21 in William Penn

Ms. Martha
Marvel
(Biography)
So many of us grew up in households where we were formed in a religious tradition that taught us to unconditionally and compassionately love our neighbors. As we matured and began our gender journey - for many that same tradition failed to understand or listen to us. In fact many go so far as to denounce us and spread mis-information about us. Many of us are left searching for a new faith space and home. What if - instead of abandoning that faith that calls us to unconditionally love - what if we embraced it. What if we focused our lives on a personal relationship with the creator and began living a life of deeds - not words, virtues not rules, lives of witness not obedience - despite organized religions. This workshop will share the story of one person who lived for many years in the closet while working full time for a major denomination. When finally able to retire, in 2017 and live her authentic life, Martha reached out to other trans people in NE Wisconsin. With three other trans persons they began meeting monthly in the private back storeroom of a gay bar in Green Bay, WI. Without wearing her faith on her shirtsleeve - working with other trans persons of good will - they created the Bay Area Council on Gender Diversity (BACGD) which is an all volunteer, fully incorporated IRS recognized 501c(3) whose mission is to "Provide support, education, and advocacy for transgender persons, their families and allies." Today BACGD is a growing community of care and service that provides a wide variety of services for trans non-binary and intersex persons, families and allies. (see https://www.BACGenderDiversity.org) The free monthly newsletter goes out to over 500 trans persons, parents, friends and allies. This workshop will review that universal call to serve our neighbors - especially those who have been hurt and marginalized. It will then go on to provide practical ideas on how to live our faiths regardless of our faith traditions and create local communities of care and service.

Bleeding While Trans: An Introduction to TGD Menstruation
3:45 PM on Sat, Mar 22 in Governor
LCSW CE
This workshop qualifies for Continuing Education Credit for Licensend Counselors & Social Workers

Mx. Tess
Olsson
(Biography)
Menstruation can be a difficult, confusing, potentially dysphoria-inducing, and sometimes awkward conversation for a lot of trans men, transmasculine individuals, and other transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people who menstruate. But it doesn’t have to be!

This session will introduce inclusive and gender-affirming language and slang to use to talk about menstruation, debunk common TGD menstrual myths (yes, you can still get pregnant while on testosterone, even if you aren’t menstruating!), and explore the relationships between menstruation and the TGD body (for both those on gender-affirming hormone therapy and those who are not). Participants will develop strategies to alleviate potential menstruation-induced dysphoria, including exploring TGD-inclusive menstrual products and menstruation cessation techniques. Attendees will also have the (optional) opportunity to participate in a group discussion on menstrual experiences and sentiments and share any personal strategies they may use to manage discomfort or dysphoria related to menstruation.

This workshop will also examine systemic and structural barriers to menstrual equity and care that are unique to the TGD experience, as well as provide suggestions for addressing or overcoming these barriers. Obstacles to and facilitators of TGD menstrual equity in the context of public bathroom design, provider education (or lack thereof), menstrual research, and more will be discussed.

Attendees of all gender identities will gain knowledge and develop skills to have affirming and informed conversations about TGD menstruation and menstrual equity. People of all gender identities are encouraged to attend and participate in this workshop!

Boudoir Photography: You Can (and Should) Do It, Too
3:45 PM on Thu, Mar 20 in United States

Charlie
Mesure
(Biography)
Every day we are inundated with images of toxic beauty standards: slim, able-bodied, heteronormative, and most apparent of all, cisgender. In a society where trans/genderqueer people face rejection at best and violence at worst, the idea of purposefully getting in front of a camera can—understandably—be unthinkable. Nevertheless, no matter what stage of transition you are in, you deserve to feel desirable, confident, and happy with your body. Photography can help.

Trans model and photographer Charlie Mesure (he/they) will describe how self-portraiture helped him learn to love his body before and during transition and why it’s so important to him that other people in his community get the chance to feel that same sense of confidence and self-worth. He’ll show examples of his work and give participants the pep talk they need to get in front of the camera (if they feel so inclined).

Participants will receive a crash course in boudoir photography and beyond, including:
  • posing basics
  • clothing and styling ideas to best fit their body type
  • how to establish boundaries with photographers
  • trans-friendly lingerie and clothing brands
  • makeup and hair basics
  • tips on how to not only survive your first photo session but to thrive by the end of it

Being trans/genderqueer in a world that is constantly telling you how you should look is exhausting. You deserve to feel desirable and confident, no matter what your body looks like. People of all gender identities are welcome.

You can find examples of Charlie’s work on his Instagram (@spookyboneboy_)

But You Lied To Me - A Way to Explore the Emotions (SOs Only)
11:00 AM on Fri, Mar 21 in Penn Harris

Ms. Susan
Bienvenu
(Biography)

Mrs. Karen
Lehman
(Biography)
This is a seminar for the SOs about the emotional impact experienced as a result of the announcement by their spouse of the intention to present as, or to transition to, the opposite gender. Some SOs do not have support systems that understand both perspectives, that being, the elation of the transitioning spouse contrast with the angst of the SO. Some things that I have heard expressed is that the SO was lied to. That the transitioning spouse 'hid this from me'. Betrayal is another term used. Although I can see that perspective, I think there is a healthier point of view that can also allow the SO to process the situation and move beyond this. A lot of SOs have heard the cleansed version "I was just so upset" of the SO, but not the full-on development of the emotional state over time. At every step during the way, the SO often feels that things won't get better, can't get better and just might get worse. But as we all know, there are many outcomes and just about all of them are positive. The workshop is SOs only to allow these attendees the opportunity to discuss this aspect - the sense of betrayal - in a room without feeling the need to edit.

Feminizing the Voice - Comparing Surgical Options
11:00 AM on Fri, Mar 21 in Brady

    Dr. James
    Thomas
    (Biography)
Dr. Thomas reveals how vocal cords function using video recordings of male, female and surgically altered vocal cords. Pitch and resonance are affected by the anatomy as well as how the anatomy is used. Surgical modification of the voice, especially Feminization Laryngoplasty (FemLar), one type of vocal cord (laryngeal) surgery is designed to obtain a feminine sounding voice and correct complications from Tracheal Shave procedures. Several other types of procedures target the frequency or pitch of the resting speaking voice to various degrees. CricoThryoid Approximation (CTA), vocal cord webbing, laser vocal cord thinning and pharyngeal narrowing procedures will be discussed and compared to each other.

Not only successful interventions are covered, but complications, durability, incomplete outcomes are reviewed. Options for correcting complications of all the above laryngeal procedures are discussed. If you have experienced a voice change after a Tracheal Shave procedure, he will discuss the correction of this problem.

At the conclusion of this workshop, the listener should better understand the concepts that can help in decision-making about the roles of voice therapy as well as when, if and what type of surgeries to consider.

Transition is a very difficult time for any couple, and can lead to the loss of the relationship. Your presenter does not believe that this has to be the inevitable outcome and hopes to offer her experience teaching communications skills as a therapist, her experience with her late spouse Jude during transition, and that of friends and acquaintances who have gone through transition of a partner, in the hope that others can find these skills and experiences useful. Aspects discussed includes "couples' transition" and skills in the use of language and negotiation, managing expectations and maintaining open lines of communication. These approaches are proven techniques in couples counseling and can help when facing difficult experiences. Please come join us for discussions and exercises that can help bring a new perspective to the power of language and negotiation.

Many school nurses do not have the facts or understand the life-threatening consequences for trans, non-binary, or questioning youth. Nurses need information about the biology of gender and the myriad variations that can and do occur—updated information to supplement the simplistic XX and XY understanding.

This engaging multimedia presentation reviews the biological basics of sex and gender, including some intersex variations. Participants will be invited to review/consider/re-visit their own gender life story before moving to school considerations. School accommodations to assist transitioning individuals can make a huge difference in the lives of trans and questioning youth. Beyond that, we will examine the cis(sys)temic barriers (Martino et al., 2020) that perpetuate the cisnormative milieu which leads to intense mental anguish for some trans youth whose contexts are unsafe for public visibility. There are simple gender-affirming actions that school nurses can take to save lives.

Ann Stillwater, M.Ed in School Nursing and Dr. Miles McGovney draw on current medical research and long experience working with trans youth, as well as personal experience. This presentation was developed with the assistance of trans youth, adults, and the family members of trans individuals. A talkback session will ask attendees to provide feedback that will improve the presentation before it is deployed as an educational tool for rural Pennsylvania school nurses.

Surviving to Thriving: Weathering the Storms of Suicidal Ideation and Gender Dysphoria
11:00 AM on Thu, Mar 20 in Governor

    Ms. Steph
    Johnson
    (Biography)
Using my story as the background, this workshop is designed to help those who struggle with the anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation that is all to common for many who have diagnosed or undiagnosed Gender Dysphoria. Fortunately, I have survived multiple suicide attempts, prior to being diagnosed with Gender Dysphoria and several plans since. The ways in which I survived are not complicated or hard, and all focused on one key thing, distracting and disrupting the mind so that I would become safe in the moment.

Within this interactive workshop, I will share a brief background of my journey and the effects of gender dysphoria and suicidal ideation. But most importantly, the workshop will focus on simple easy cognitive and behavioral tools that can be deployed easily and quickly in the moment to help keep us, or those we love safe. These come from an article that I have recently finished writing and hope to have published. All of them are things that I have done and experienced personally, to keep myself save physically and emotionally in times of moderate to severe duress as a result of my gender dysphoria.

It is not easy for anyone to talk about the darker sides of our dysphoria, and it is often overlooked, but this session, although it may bring a few tears, is designed to also bring some laughter, singing, even possibly dancing as we continue our journey's of self care, love and acceptance. Whether you, your loved ones, or you work helping those who have transitioned, are considering or are anywhere along their journey, I and confident that you will walk away from this workshop with a greater awareness of the importance of understanding the impacts of gender dysphoria on those who have it, and how to help them in the greatest times of duress to continue their journey another day.

You never know, you may just help save a life one day.

There are many factors to consider in coming out to your children or loved ones. First, do they need to know at all, if you are not publicly transitioning? Of course, there are the how, when, what, and where issues to tell family, not to mention the developmental level of the kids in question and the knowledge/support of their other parent. These factors will all be addressed in this workshop. Let's talk about your level of comfort with yourself and your existing relationships with your children and family. What are your goals? What do you want them to feel and to understand about this part of you? How can you help them to feel safe and loved through this transition in your family? We will go over some basic recommendations to keep in mind, but also invite you to ask your own questions and share your personal experiences with telling your children - your fears, successes, disasters, and everything in between. Please join us for this discussion. I can't tell you how to deal with your children, but I'm sure that listening to others' ideas will be helpful.

Parenting the transgender child (at any age) is a complex and challenging experience, even for the accepting parent. Personal, familial, political, and societal norms and values impact and influence parents as they navigate the journey. While professional knowledge and experience can act as a support for the parent, they may not buffer individual emotions and responses. Statistics indicate a direct correlation between supportive parents and improved mental health in transgender children. Those interacting with parents professionally need to be prepared to interact with empathy for the parents' emotional responses, as well as, reinforcing the needs of the child. This presentation will utilize personal experience as the parent of a transgender child, direct professional experience as a therapist, and research statistics to present a picture of what is needed from and by the parents of this population.

The Maleficent Seven - How to Handle the Clobber Passages
2:15 PM on Thu, Mar 20 in Lochiel

    Rev. Grace
    Ferris
    (Biography)
Bible-thumping bigots and haters use seven very specific Bible passages in their attempts to prove that people like you and me will rot and burn in Hell. We call them the "clobber passages" because they are used to clobber us. Four of them are from the Old Testament (Genesis 1:29, Genesis 19, Leviticus 18:22, and Deuteronomy 23:17-18), and three are from the New Testament (Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6:9, and 1 Timothy 1:10).

The sad reality is that their understanding of what the holy scriptures really say is way off base. Anti-LGBTQ people cling to an incorrect understanding of what those passages actually mean. This incorrect understanding comes from centuries of bias that have found their way into Bible translation and instruction over time.

In this session we will explore each of these passages, considering their history, context, and original meaning. An accurate understanding of these passages actually affirms the fact that LGBTQ people are part of God's design for the beauty that is humanity.

Please note that it is typically impossible to argue with bigots and haters. The purpose of this session is not to provide defense in debate, but rather simply to set your own mind at ease when you find yourself on the receiving end of such hateful rhetoric.

Transformative Wellness - Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life!
9:30 AM on Thu, Mar 20 in Metropolitan B

    Ms. Gwen
    Richardson
    (Biography)
My first day as a police officer, some as-yet-unidentified man, called 9-1-1 and said “Come and pick up my body.” At that moment, the police dispatcher could hear a large BANG and the phone line remained open. Upon arrival at the residence in question, a man was found lying dead on the kitchen floor with a gun in his right hand and the phone in his left hand, and a blood trail that had oozed its way approximately 10 feet across the room and under the refrigerator. “Welcome to police-work!” As I embarked on a career that would last roughly thirty-years, I realized that I would have to learn to deal with unexpected—and potentially horrific—situations such as the one described above. How then, would I prepare myself for the inevitable onslaught of the things-to-come and remain normal in a very abnormal job?

For me, I became a student of wellness, and proceeded to read many self-help books and attended a number of seminars and presentations (I even got to meet Dr. Wayne Dyer in-person—which was quite a thrill for me). You see, I decided to take charge of my own mental health and wellness very early in my career. This had a profound effect on my ability to remain centered on my own well-being. I knew that in order to accomplish this, I would have to learn new skills and wisdom and transform both myself and my thinking if I were to become the best version of myself.

So, that’s what this session is about: transformative wellness—changing the way you look at things as well as changing yourself, with a view to help you navigate the “slings and arrows” of life and the unforeseen calamities that might come your way. Regardless of your career choices, your gender, your political point-of-view, if you want to arm yourself with a cloak of resiliency in the face of an ever-changing world, then this session is for you!

Transitioning in the Workplace - Opportunities Created and Lessons Learned
2:15 PM on Fri, Mar 21 in Metropolitan B

    Ms. Alicia
    Mullens
    (Biography)
While there is still a long way to go (especially in your current political climate), many workplaces across the United States have put in tremendous effort into being welcoming spaces for LGBTQ+ employees, with many making intentional space for transgender employees to affirm their gender. However, the combination of an increasingly hostile political climate, major corporations abandoning their commitments to DEI programs, and the persistence of systems that have historically made it difficult for transgender employees to transition (such as name change protocols) make navigating transitioning in the workplace a scary idea for may.

This workshop will first cover my (a transgender college professor) experiences with transitioning at two different schools, the difficulties of navigating two completely different processes, and the opportunities (such as advocating for better "Preferred Name" processes, and becoming a safe space for many queer/trans students), many of which were unanticipated, transitioning in the college classroom created for me. While I'll cover my experience transitioning in higher education, it is meant to serve as a primer for a larger group discussion on all of our experiences of transitioning in the workplace (whether higher education or not).

While the workshop's facilitator has experience primarily in higher education in California, anyone who has an experience to share with transitioning at work, or anyone who is looking into transitioning at work will still gain much from this workshop.

    Rev. Grace
    Ferris
    (Biography)
The effects of trauma can linger long after a traumatic event happens. In this interactive session, participants will work together to identify coping mechanisms to aid in healing. Using a Giant Jenga tower to stimulate discussion and collaboration, participants will first identify and vocalize traumatic triggers before collectively coming up with strategies for coping. This is an adaptation of an exercise that was developed by Mother Grace and another Army National Guard chaplain while they were serving together on the New York National Guard covid response mission. in follow-up sessions, soldiers who went through the exercise felt that the exercise had been helpful in their own healing. Participants will be asked to identify and vocalize to the group one or two triggers, and to offer suggestions for healing strategies. The triggers could be related to any kind of trauma. This will be a safe space in which participants will be able to speak freely; participants are expected to exercise confidentiality following the session.
