I am currently a licensed family physician with a full time outpatient practice and also work as a part-time hospitalist at Wellspan York Hospital. I first started to provide gender affirming care in residency after an encounter with my first trans-female patient. When I asked her about pronoun use, she burst into tears and said that no doctor had ever asked her that before, and she asked if since I knew about pronouns, if I could help her undergo medical gender affirming therapy. I helped start the gender affirming medical program at Wellspan York Hospital Family Medicine Residency with a beloved faculty member (Dr Cathy Carpenter) and truly embodied the idea of "see one, do one, teach one". I helped build that practice and trained staff on working well with this unique population, then when I graduated residency, had a large group of gender diverse individuals follow me to my new practice in Brogue, PA where I now have a large gender diverse and gender affirming medicine panel. Amidst the chaos, long hours, and endless frustrations with modern medicine, it is truly my work with gender affirming medicine that provides me with the "why I do this" answer every time I get to work with one of my patients.
